This is an idea of the "International AT" group. The route for the International AT extends north all the way to Labrador and they have talked about extending it to Scotland (they say Scotland used to be part of the Appalachians before the continents broke apart or something).

I read about this idea a few weeks ago. The AT through northern Maine and Canada is still a lot of road walking, but I'd love to hike it sometime.

I don't really know what the point of calling the Scotland trail "Appalachian Trail" is, but I'm all in favor of more hiking trails wherever they are. I definitely plan to spend one summer hiking Great Britain...and soon.
