hi,i have a question regarding a week long trip i have planned for next month regarding backcountry sites.

Guyot
Ethan Pond
Nauman

can you pitch a freestanding tent at these sites or are there only platforms to to pitch tents on?

Freestanding are fine, you can tie them down

There is info on AMC backcountry sites here (http://www.outdoors.org/lodging/campsites/index.cfm). Where it says "pad", that is a 'dirt' area for a tent. A tent can be rigged on any platform if you carry some rope and know how to do it.

Did you mean to say "freestanding"? Non-freestanding tents require more skill to pitch on platforms.
