Most people can separate the wheat from the chaff in this kind of thread. IMO.

Its important that this report gets shared with as many people as possible.

The thread should not be shut down, it should be revisited frequently do that hikers who have been in the area or will be headed there can consider the information.

Is it posted on the ATC site yet? It should be. Or perhaps not since Troy is far north of the AT?

Troy is near the LT's northern terminus, so the lean-to where the incident took place isn't on the AT/LT shared section.

"Conflicting info," as you call it, is actually quite common in the early reporting stages of a story, when cops are releasing little to no info. Doesn't have anything to do with anything.

I'd like to hear more about this. Interesting if she was, in fact, able to scare off an attacker by merely saying she had a weapon.

Stick to the topic at hand, and maybe we can all learn something from whatever took place here.

I agree....very tasteless to make light of this..
And yet ANOTHER reason to be armed( doesnt have to be a gun ), willing and able to defend one's self if forced into the situation.....male or female... Scaring somebody off simply by telling them that you have a weapon.......Well she is very lucky that he wasnt a determined attacker.

Topic: Hiker says she was attacked in lean-to.
Boston.Com: she [said she] was attacked by an unknown male
BurlingtonFreep: Woman allegedly attacked on Long Trail
FreepArticle: looking for a man who allegedly tried to assault a woman
FreepArticle: when a man tried to attack her.

So somebody "tried to attack her." What does that mean? Did he swing at her with a hiker pole? Did he verbally threaten her?

Update 6/2/2009: Ben Rose, Executive Director of the Green Mountain Club, reported that a staff member of the GMC had a phone conversation earlier today with the law enforcement officer involved.

He added:

"The alleged incident took place at
Shooting Star. The investigation is ongoing, and there will likely be
more details available next week. It is fair to say, based on the
investigation thus far, that this is believed to be an isolated/confined
incident."

Thanks, GMC, for staying on top of this for all of us.

Okay, I'll try this again without mentioning a name that apparently gets your posts instantly purged.

There is a well-known AT persona that has said that women lie about assaults and being stalked in order "to sell books." He absolutely believed it never happens, women always lie about it, and in any case women just didn't belong on the trail. He even eliminated a womans forum on a previously popular website. I know women who have been stalked and we all know of true cases of assaults, some of them fatal.

Now, are you going to banish me again? For being honest?

Hopefully they will catch this guy. No one should every have to worry if they are going to be attacked by some idiot on the trail. With that said, I wouldn't count on everything being put out as completely accurate. Don't get me wrong, I not saying or suggesting she made anything up. From my own experience night hiking, at 10:00 pm night time it is extremely hard to see the actuate colors in the dark unless you have a very good light. I can't see her having one on while is she was sleeping. His light would be on as he is running away from her (thank heaven).

I just hope they catch this guy before he does anything like this again.

I didn't hear anything about this on the local news. Weird.

Have to say in the short hiking season this year, my wife and I have run into several "non hikers" far off the beaten path. Ran into one gentleman on in Hazens notch that was dragging a rusty bicycle up the trail.

Spoke with a Border patrol agent that lives in North Troy and he said the drug & human trafficking is off the charts the past couple months. He recommended being escorted or armed when working (I'm an appraiser) in vacant areas close to the border. Camps and vacant homes have been broken into and used as stopovers for traffickers.

So far all we know about this incident after 4 or 5 days is that someone reported an undefined "assault," according to a three paragraph Associated Press on a local station.

A local newspaper adds a fourth AP paragraph, saying a warrant has been issued for someone that apparently no one on White Blaze seems to know.

Having earned my living in the news business for nearly 40 years, I can think of a hundred scenarios that suggest this may be a false alarm. Only one or two that suggests this is a significant trail happening.

I also know from those decades of experience that if a reporter assumes the obvious answer is the true answer, it almost always turns out to be wrong. This insight produced some of my greatest stories.

However, i see little evidence that the speculations on White Blaze about this incident reflect what may have happened.

Let's try these possibilities, knowing a person reported an assault:

1. A dangerous assailent was run off by the threat of a weapon.
2. A pushy but perhaps harmless person was similarly run off.
3. The victim totally misunderstood the alleged assailents innocent intentions. (as in"can I sleep here too?")
4. Nothing at all happened, except for a false police report.

We have no idea whatever what actually transpired.

Can we drop this now until there is actual information?

The girl did not get attacked and did not report an alleged attack. This incident could be nothing more than a misunderstanding by a silly girl who thought she should have the shelter to herself.
The lack of reading comprehension and ability to navigate through a thread has caused some posters to unfairly attack other posters and make some nasty comments about them.

TD55,

Rough gave a source of an article that reported a woman was attacked. There is also another source that such an attack was reported also:

http://www.burlingtonfreepress.com/article/20090601/NEWS02/90601012

Could you please include your source that such an attack did not happen and in fact this was the working of some silly girl? If you are going to make a statement that this “girl did not get attacked” or “report an alleged attack” despite two sources it was report, I like to know were you are getting your information and know your not talking out your @ss.

Did this attack happen? I don't know. I'm half way around the world. I wasn't there to see if it did or did not happen. If you know something, I suggest you talk with the VT police. What I do know is I have no reason to disbelieve her. I'm sad to say this but to many such attacks happen that are not reported because the victim believes no one will believe them.

I am reading the same reports as everyone else, the ones that are posted in this thread. I see a sensational article about an incident where a girl claims that an assault was attempted and the writer(s) of the articles have decideded to call that an "attack" rather than an "incident". If you can clearify what an "attempted assault" is it would be helpful. As it stands at this time, there is no information or even allegation that this person was touched or in any way harmed.
I find it silly and sad when men have to stand up and publicly declare that they will stand up and protect womenhood and how nobody better do anything bad when they are around because they will kick-butt, blah, blah, blah. Like all the rest of us don't have daughters and sisters and wives and mothers and we need a lecture on how to protect them.
Some may read about the danger a lone woman may face from this story, some may read about the danger a lone man may face.

A little ambiguous, no? Paranoid people feel threatened all the time. Does this give them the right to go around attacking complete strangers? I had no idea she was reaching for a box of thin mint cookies."

If you feel comfortable saying this:

based on the articles, your reading comprehension needs as much work as your compassion.

The articles are somewhat ambiguous, but the law is not. My interpretation of both articles is that the victim alleged that an assault occurred. It is not clear from the articles whether battery or a sexual assault was alleged.
Assault:

A crime (http://www.nolo.com/definition.cfm/term/D82E9E8C-BB95-4F9A-97E134E302E0D7C2) that occurs when one person tries to physically harm another in a way that makes the person under attack feel immediately threatened. Actual physical contact is not necessary; threatening gestures that would alarm any reasonable person can constitute an assault. http://www.nolo.com/definition.cfm/term/22542b6f-fedb-450a-889a82a49ea50ceb/alpha/a/

Assault is often confused with Battery:

A crime (http://www.nolo.com/definition.cfm/term/D82E9E8C-BB95-4F9A-97E134E302E0D7C2) consisting of physical contact that is intended to harm someone. Unintentional harmful contact is not battery, no mater how careless the behavior or how severe the injury. A fist fight is a common battery; being hit by a wild pitch in a baseball game is not.
http://www.nolo.com/definition.cfm/Term/17A1E180-3796-4CCB-8E65996C566DDC20/alpha/B/

These definitions match what I recall of Mass. law, but I am not a lawyer.

Pokey2006

An assault IS an attack. The words are interchangeable.

I don't see anything sensational about the article, nor do I see any evidence of a writer beefing anything up. If anything, we should blame the authorities for not releasing enough info on what has happened.

But to conclude from this that nothing happened at all??? You're just being ridiculous.

"Well officer, this girl came to my door dressed in some type of militant uniform. She reached for something I thought was a gun. I felt threatened so I beat her up. I had no idea she was reaching for a box of thin mint cookies."

You can meet "force with deadly force", but "force" is vague, "deadly force" isn't

To conclude that nothing at all may have happened is perfectly reasonable. To repeat: We have no idea what, if anything happened.

You're right -- we can't conclude that something DID happen. But at the same time, we cannot conclude that something DIDN'T happen, either. Either statement would be false.
