I mostly go on hikes of 2-3 nights and I tradded my full size pack for a 2800 c inch Arcteryx Bora 40. I use the camel back feature for my tent. This is the most comfortable pack I've ever owned. They may no longer make this model, but I'm sure they have similar ones.

The only other pack I have is a day pack and it came from walmart. If staying overnight, I carry my big pack. With the exception of food, the gear remains the same.

A 50 litre UL pack is still a nice small size for a short hike but 25 litres is better and there isn't much need to go smaller than that even if you want to do some trail running. I am now using use my 50 litre 20oz Jam2 for longer or winter hikes or overnight hikes with my daughter, but I'm using my 27 litre 10oz Patagonia Daypack for up to 3 day summer hikes alone.

This is the daypack I use everyday and for short solo hikes in summer.

I removed the back pad and pack it so I don't need one so it only weighs 10oz, not 15oz.

Also I got that pack for $50 at the Patagonia store in Freeport Maine, across the street from LLBean.

I'll use for dayhikes the regular size Waterboy from here: http://www.toughtraveler.com/waistpacks.asp

Plenty big enough and comfortable. Looks kinda retro though.

I use the same Patagonia daypack as JAK. I paid $55, back in the day. They now list at $90. I found the straps a little uncomfortable, so added Timbuktu strap pads. That did the trick.

My daughter just bought a Marmot daypack, a little smaller and with no pockets, for $48.

That's a rather heavy looking Marmot. I would almost call that a Gopher.

I use the same REI Flash UL on both long distance and shorter hikes. It is 1,050 cu/in which has enought room for both a 5 day hike but not to big not to be used for a day pack. It ran me $25. Great pack for a great price.

I think the high end for a daypack for me would have been this - http://www.backcountrygear.com/catalog/packdetail.cfm/GO9123. But most of my daypacks cost substantially less.
