On 5/17, an LEO on the Eastern Divide RD made contact with a hiker wanted in connection with an alleged assault on the Appalachian Trail in North Carolina. The hiker, known as "Spike" in the trail community, was contacted in Pearisburg, VA and served with four violation notices requiring a mandatory appearance in U.S. Magistrates Court in Asheville, NC. The victim of the assault is recovering from his injuries. This case has been a cooperative effort between LEI employees in North Carolina and Virginia with Rangers from the Appalachian Trail NP.
