View Full Version : Penguin Down?

Has anyone considered using penguin down as insulation for quilts and bags? Not sure where you would get it or if it's available for consumer use. But, seems to me it would be perfect for backpackers who hike in wet environments and want the light weight and warmth of down and maybe not having to worrying as much about it getting wet. Yeah, I know use a good dry bag and your bag won't get wet.

I know they make penguin down bags for cats, but I believe they're working on a cost effective larger bag for humans? http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c293/keipop/emu_penguin02-1.jpg

I never heard of this idea but i dont think that it would be that warm. In the artic when its extremely cold they Mostly stay warm by huddling in groups of hundreds. Thats the reason why i dont think its that warm.

Nice link sidewinder. So I guess the ultimate insulation is to hike in groups of thousands and huddle up on cold nights.

HAH...and add a thick layer of blubber.

I started thinking about penguin down this morning when I removed my down bag from the dryer and found a dark gray/black feather sticking out. I worked it back in and realized I had only seen white down feathers in the past. I laughed and said it must have been a penguin.

I've been toying with the idea of making a summer down quilt and decided to throw out the idea and see if anyone here had thought of using penguin down.

Most commercial goose down is a side product of goose production for food. To get large quantities of penguin down, you'd have to create a market for penguin burgers, grilled penguin, beer-can penguin, penguin flambe, penguin pate, and penguin a la king.

Good luck with that....

Since nobody's actually answered seriously, I'll go right on ahead:

Down on any animal, is not waterproof. It's the feathers that provide the waterproof cover for the down. In the case of Penguins, a layer of air is created between the water and the down which is insulative.

That's why oil spills are such a big deal. The oil screws with the feathers and then the down gets wet, resulting in fungal infections and loss of insulation.

Nothing like facts to screw up a string of nonsensical play.

If there were such a thing as "waterproof down", I wonder what would be the underlying physics, chemistry and mechanics to allow such high volumetric compression/expansion, low weight and waterproofness all in one.

The feather solution splits out the waterproofness from the above mix of properties.

Yah: ever smell the penguin exhibit at the zoo?
How do you get down off an elephant?
You can't: you get down off a penguin.

I'd love to pluck the little suckers. I heard their meat tastes just like chicken cooked in fish oil.

Penguins

Did you ever wonder why there are no dead penguins on the ice in Antarctica - where do they go?

Wonder no more!!!

It is a known fact that the penguin is a very ritualistic bird which lives an extremely ordered and complex life.

The penguin is very committed to its family and will mate for life, as well as maintaining a form of compassionate contact with its offspring throughout its life.

If a penguin is found dead on the ice surface, other members of the family and social circle have been known to dig holes in the ice, using their vestigial wings and beaks, until the hole is deep enough for the dead bird to be rolled into and buried.

The male penguins then gather in a circle around the fresh grave and sing: comcast.net

"Freeze a jolly good fellow",

Then they kick him in the ice hole.

You really didn't believe that I know anything about penguins, did you?
