I found this site which makes a variety of styles of moccasins, including one they suggest specifically for use on the Appalachian Trail. Their FAQ page has alot of information which might be useful if you wanted to try making your own.

Their links page is quite interesting also. They must do a lot of work for people that are into blackpowder and historical re-enactments and so forth.

Has anyone made their own moccasins for hiking? Any good tips or links?

haha, kind of on topic, but I decided to make a pair of houseshoe mocs a while back and this is what happened... :)

it was corduroy lined with flannel and a piece of carpet pad between the two under the foot

Nice work cwayman1. I like the idea of starting with something like that for home use.
Easy to sew and good prototyping for learning how to make trail mocs.

kayak karl aka Little Flame,
Neat stuff. Did you get much wear out of them?

I am planning to make a pair of Moc's with my kids this fall. I need to find a good source of thick leather for the sole of mine.

On those sandals they look like a pair that I had bought when i was in Kenya back in the late 80's. They made theirs from tire for the sole but used inner tube for the straps and held the hole thing together with carpet tacks. They were the original keens. lol. Mine had some nice bead work on the straps as well. they would turn your feet black as night after you wore them for a little bit.

Hiking the AT in mocs??? Not in Pa.!!! Unless he's using "ballistic leather", the rocks will tear them to shreads.

I used to bow-hunt in mocs - you can feel every twig, pebble, and curve of the ground in mocs, unlike walking in regular hunting boots, so it's easier to walk quietly.

Sasquatch, there's a Tandy Leather store in East Hartford, or you can order leather, kits and tools from them online.
