Well i just ordered my first food dehydrator in hopes of making my own food for my trips. The dehydrator does come with some recipes, but i was wandering where i might beable to find more.I've never used one before so really the only ideas that come to mind are fruit, veggies, and jerky. I'm hoping to beable to have a few more options then those. Thanks in advance.

Jo-To,

You'll have lots of fun with your new toy. Here is an article I wrote on food dehydration for the Washington Trails Association that covers the basics and has some recipes.

If you have any questions at all just post a message here or you can pm me.

Line the trays with parchment paper instead of the plastic fruit leather trays. it works a lot better. You can reuse the paper several times too.
Lay the plastic tray liner on the parchment paper and trace around it with a pencil. Cut the shape out with scissors and you have a tray liner.

Most foods dry well, but not all of them rehydrate well. Most one dish casserole type meals work OK.

I store dried foods with a higher oil content in the freezer until I go hiking.

Here's a quick cheap meal to get You started. Cook the pasta from a box of Mac & Cheese. Rinse it in cold water to shock it, and drain. Dry until hard, and store in a freezer bag. To rehydrate, add 2 1/2 cups of boiling water to the bag and wait about 5 minuites. There should just be a little water left in the bag. Add 1 Tablespoon of dry milk powder, the cheese packet, and some olive oil or butter buds. Add extra cheese, meat, salsa or pasta sauce if You want.

Cheers!

If you want recipes for entire dishes to be dehydrated you can't beat Linda Frederick Yaffe's books, The Backpack Gourmet http://product.half.ebay.com/Backpack-Gourmet_W0QQtgZinfoQQprZ2275164 and High Trail Cookery http://product.half.ebay.com/High-Trail-Cookery_W0QQtgZinfoQQprZ1375239 I have both of these books and they are fantastic. After a while you start coming up with your own.

Here is a calculator that estimates the weight of various foods post dehydration. I've used it for some of my trips. Best

No problem, thx for heading me in the right direction. My book & dehydrator should both arrive my Wed...that gives me exactly one week to make something good before my section hike starts!

Jo-To,

The Quinoa and Spinach Soup on page 170 is one of my favorites. :)
