In the last couple of weeks, my good friend and fellow hiker Steve "Buckowens" Owens has been deployed to Afghanistan for yet another round of defending our country.
I met Steve when I was looking for someone to transcribe my TJ for last years hike and re-supply my gear as well.
I e-mailed him and he was totally stoked and more than willing to take on this task.
Steve just sent me an e-mail from abroad telling me of rocket fire and casualties in the last few days. I cannot imagine going through that and still having great spirits to go hike.
I would ask that the folks here at WB drop him an e-mail to show that we care for him and all the soldiers. His e-mail address is [email protected]. Please enter "From a Hiking Friend at WB" in the subject line so he won't think it's spam. Thanks.
Steve is a CW5 in the US ARMY and flies the B-20 aircraft here in the States, and is a former Blackhawk pilot as well. He also was a West Virginia State Trooper.
He said to me that he hopes to be back so he can make entries in my Journal and help me to fulfill my goal of hiking the AT. I have never met a more selfless individual in my life. With all that's going on, he still has time to think of others first.
I have listed his Trail Journal link if you wish to know more about him, his family, and his love for hiking the AT. He has been as far as I to Fontana Dam and look forward to eventually hiking with him.
Hopefully Steve will be back in the States very soon.

Thanks for the info. Will e-mail him today.
While on the subject, my AT hike this year is dedicated to the men and women who have served and are serving our country. Specifically I am hiking in honor of Marcus Luttrell , author of LONE SURVIVOR & in memory of Danny Deitz, Matthew Axelson, & Lt. Michael Murphy, the 3 remaining members of Navy Seal Team 10 who lost their lives on the side of a mountain in Afghanistan in 2005 during OPERATION REDWING. Many times on the trail I have drawn my strength from this book and have made it through tough situations. My thanks to all who have/are serving. God Bless and keep you safe.

Just a quick update....

I have been e-mailing with Buckowens, Steve, for the last couple of months now. He sounds in good spirits and he's coming home for a couple of weeks pretty soon, then back to Afghanistan to finish his tour of duty.

Recently, I have sent a couple of care packages with stuff that's pretty hard to get a hold of over there.
If you wish to contribute to the next set of care packages, please PM me and I can give you the ins and outs of what's acceptable and how to get it to him. There is no alcohol, of the human inebriating variety, and no porn whatsoever.

Please keep the well wishes coming through the e-mail listed in the first post as he is extremely appreciative.

Thanks!

Wow what a great stroke of luck. I've been away from the forum for a while and just recently began visiting again. I met Buck and Roo on the trail in Georgia a few years back and have wondered how he was doing, but for the life of me I couldn't remeber his name.

I will be sending an e-mail along shortly and will also contact you regarding the care package. And thinks for keeping us up to date.

He is a stand-up guy for sure.

I wasn't sure of issues with clearances and such, but I will post some pics that he sent me if that is acceptable with him and Uncle Sam.:-?:D
