so do you LOVE IT
or LEAVE IT?First tried mine around 1958 or so. Thought I had a bad bottle, but I was told it was supposed to taste like that. Had my last Moxie that same day, but I discovered Dad's root beeer that day, to it was okay.

My wife loves it, and her nephew who lives in LA says you can get it there now.

Had a bottle in my room for four years.

Tried it. Hated it. Realized it was sitting in my room for four years.

Got a new one. Tried it. Still sucked.

One evening while working night shifts at the local papermill, a representative for a machine company from away went to a vending machine and bought an orange can out of the vending machine. He wasnt aware that the locals had insisted that the vending machines at the mill were always stocked with at least one row of Moxie. He proceeded to come back from the vending area, open up the can and take a big gulp of about half the can. Almost immediately he spit the entire contents of the can across the floor and yelling in a very annoyed tone "what is this s**t, its the worse stuff I have drank in my life". He apparently thought that if soda was in an orange can that it would be orange flavored. A while later I noticed he was tobbacco chewer. :-?

I have had enough of a taste of the stuff that I leave it to the folks who like it. But its definitely an acquired taste.

Moxie is the state of Maine's official soft drink. (http://www.accessmylibrary.com/coms2/summary_0286-6597859_ITM)
(from what i have witnessed, its mostly retired drunks that consume it, they like its bite.) :D

I LOVE it. (Actually DIET Moxie, not regular. :) )

I explain the taste as a combination of root beer and the old Formula 44.

(Doesn't work with folks younger than their late 30's since Formula 44 re-formulated in the 1980's. ;) )

Well, when I was a little kid I hated it. But, because of nostalgia after moving away from New Hampshire I decided to find it and try it again. Now I love it. I would describe the flavor as a strong sassafras.

I "grew up" on it and still imbibe. I remember when it was made with cane sugar syrup, not corn syrup, and still prefer that original taste. I have been told that the diet Moxie tastes more like the original. Maybe I should try it.

Let's see. It was an independent company with its corporate headquarters along Rt 128 in Massachusetts. At some point, Ted Williams purchased the company and the label was changed. Then a company in the south bought it but kept the Ted Williams label. Now it is back to the original label.

Couple of years ago I was at the AT crossing on Rt 7 near Sheffield, Mass, and was craving a soda, so I decided to hike to the garden center just north of the trail crossing to see if they had a vending machine. The lady there gave me a diet Moxie cola on the house, bless her soul. On second thought maybe that's how she prevents return visits:D. Haven't had the desire to repeat that taste experience again. I'm certain it's an aquired taste;).

Everyone should try it once every twenty years, just to check for early onset dementia. Hard to forget that stuff. I hope. Crap. Now I gotta go get one.

Ahhh Moxie.... Now there is a mans soda. It puts hair on your chest. None of that wimpy vanilla cherry Coke or Pepsi stuff for me...I was raised on Moxie. When I got old enough to drink booze I discovered the wonders of Moxie with a shot of either Jack or Wild Turkey...Don't have to worry about people stealing your drink when you're drinking that stuff.....It is an acquired taste though I will admit but hey maybe its because of Moxie that I had no problem learning to love the tastes of stuff like single malt scotch and Limburger cheese also...:D

I know this is a heated topic for debate but I kinda like the stuff. My first taste was at Whitehouse Landing week before last, of course it didn't taste as bitter wince I was washing down some Ben & Jerry's. I was actually drinking a cold can before I found this thread. I left Maine with 4 6 packs. I like it for it's strong taste. I like different things and strong tastes. Yum

Ya' know, I kind of liked it. I'd definitely try it again. But then again, I drink spinach and wheatgrass blended in fruit juice, so don't take my word for it.

We sell that stuff at the Beer Distributor I work at. I have been told it tastes like very flat root beer, but I don't want to try it and find out.

I suspect that anyone who likes Moxie may have a brain tumor or something. :-? I always wondered how Moxie could stay in business selling only one soda per customer. It never occurred to me that anyone would go back for more.:)

The strange thing about Moxie is that it is brewed somewhere down south but its seems to be a Northern New England drink. Maybe its the southerners revenge?:D

It was owned by an Atlanta-based company until a couple years ago when it was sold to the Japanese.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moxie

"The drink is bottled in Londonderry, New Hampshire, Worcester, Massachusetts, and Catawissa, Pennsylvania."

And prior to being owned by the Atlanta-based company (which also produced the syrup for some other tonics), it was owned (not just endorsed) by Ted Williams. And before that, it was owned by some New Englanders. I remember the corporate office building along Rte 128 on the outskirts of Boston.

I'm with mudhead on this one, one can every 10-20 years does it for me.
Heres some history on the brew and what i recall it was originally marketed as:

Moxie, the cola, originated in Maine in the 1870s and was originally marketed as a tonic for what ails you. Among the afflictions it was said to cure were “softening of the brain” and “loss of manhood.” Apparently it was the Viagra of its day.

By the 1880s the boys on the Moxie marketing team must have realized the soda would never measure up to popularity of the little blue pill so they added carbonation and repositioned the drink to be used for ‘refreshment.’ I use the term lightly. If you’ve ever tasted it you know, despite its deceptively pleasing orange can, it is the most vile concoction ever invented.
