"Nomaderwhat" - verry nice!!

Was out this past week at Roan, TN. Hornets, rain, fog, heat, lost, 55 pound pack, and exhausted (not really)...and I still want to do it. Worst thing about it was how bad my shoes stunk. Had to keep them away from the tent.

St. Patrick's Day is a great time to start. Chicken Man and I started on St. Patrick's Day in 2002 after a case of Guinness at the trail head campground.:sun

Yeah, Guinness is a GREAT way to start the trail! The party at Low Gap arose as a reunion of that 2002 SPD start.

Justin - You won't be hiking by yourself.....this trail is too popular, but leave during the week, not on the weekend. We are hiking in 2010 and will be leaving the 15th if all goes well.

See you on the walk north....

Why is this?

Why is this?I believe the rationale is there is less of a crowd then on the weekend.

Also heading NOBO sometime in March. Sounds like the 1st is the best day to catch most of you guys. Is anyone interested in in a practice hike around the end of October? I'm in FL, but would like to start the practice hike in GA. My e-mail is [email protected]

The date isn't definite yet, but it is looking like I will be leaving on March 3. I will probably take Amtrak down, arrive in the morning of March 2, and spend the night somewhere in Gainesville before heading to the trail. I don't know how I will be getting to the trail yet. Anyone else with similar plans?

I am getting more anxious by the day.... having trouble staying focused on my work, walking the trail is all I seem to be able to think about..... I deffinately have a bad case of springer fever going on!!!

Just in case.... yes leaving in march, with a 92mi. approach trail! :) !!!!! Not sure yet if I am going to start my approach trail on march 1 or try to be at springer BY march 1. either way...... I am on pens and needles - cant wait for MARCH baby!!!!!

I'm not sure about the date yet, but I'll be hitting the trail between March 1st and 15th. I section hiked Springer to Damascus in 2006 and can't wait to get out there again. Spring can't come fast enough!

You start any day in March you'll have company, and this is especially true if you start on a Saturday or a Sunday, as most folks get dropped off at Springer by parents, friends, girlfriends, whatever. If you want to hike your first few days out with a few less people, then start at mid-week, tho truly, if you start anytime between 10 March and 5 April it really won't make that much difference.

JustinNorris - If you leave any weekend (F-Sun) in the month of March or April it is impossible to hike alone! Although, I don't know from first hand experience yet, everyone says is. The only thing you might do alone is travel to Springer - you might try and get someone to travel to Springer and share a shuttle cost or driving cost. Good Luck and have fun!
