View Full Version : Hiker word out mouth!

Everyone on the trail has their opinions... which of course they are entitled to but a few of them really have killed me!

The biggest one was... Virginia... flat as a pancake!!!

VIRGINIA was in my opinion (of course) just as hard or easy as any part of the trail before it (south of it)! It was no damn pancake... and it was no walk in the park!!!

Just a warning to any and all future hikers... don't believe trail hype... it is almost always goofy and somehow wrong... once again in my opinion.

It's the things nobody talks about that usually kick my ass...

Wondering if anyone else has experienced this...

Godspeed

Virginia being flat is a trail story that has fooled thru hikers for years and years. :)

Oh, you're finished with VA?
It's all downhill from there.
Have fun!

Me: "Hey, how far back is the (shelter/roadcrossing/whatever)?"

Hiker going in the opposite direction: "It's just ahead a few minutes. I just passed it."

Liar, liar, polypro on fire.

no concern for winter hikes in the mts of NC. Just leave that cold weather gear at home.

My favorite was a guy who said "it's just basic bouldering" before I got to Chairback Mtn in Maine. I thought I should'a had a rope!

Don't listen to SOBOs coming out of the 100 mile wilderness when you're going in. It's really not that bad.

Don't believe them when they say the Whites are dangerous....tackle those ridges on any day with high wind and rain....lightning will help lead the way if your hiking at night. Which also isn't too hard.

Dont bother with a bug net for those black flies in maine either...they are only a few thousand to a swarm

(Surely there can't be a swarm of them every 5 feet:D)

The Blue Ridge Parkway section, from I-81 to Waynesboro is second only to Maine in toughness, IMO. Southern Virginia is a cakewalk and the Shenandoah's are pretty easy, as well.

i dont think there are any rocks in PA.

There aren't really on the AT. Want to see rocks (along with sticker bushes and multiple hard to cross blowdowns and insane PUDs worse than the rollercoaster), Hike the tuscarora trail. Other than that, nope no rocks in PA that I can recall.

I haven't hiked it yet but from looking at the topographical profile my next section hike in Virginia (Three Ridges to the James River) looks like it will kick my butt.

he's a good dog.

sorry dog lovers, but I heard this too many times and observed differently. take precaution anyway. Dogs make me nervous for a reason.

This isn't just limited to the trail.

"how much further to the summit?"
Me, "just around the next corner"...

"Hows hitchhiking around here"
Me, "depends on who is driving by"

"Is there any water up ahead"
Me, "theres a whole pond full of it"

Just by being on this site you could have learned that VA isnt flat. IF you have made it that far, the northern journey is the best part. Each state flies by at this point. Savour Vermont NH and Maine
