New York Times, "A Race Against the Treacherous Landscape." (Sunday Sports section, p8, 6-28-09)

The guy lives up to his name. The race was on the Bighorn Trail, Wyoming -- 100 miles with 17,500 feet of elevation change -- and Karl Metzler won with a time of 19 hrs. 15 minutes 26 seconds, which is a new course record (he also held the old course record). This is also the first time anyone had ever broken 20 hrs. on this course.

My favorite quote from the article: "And as tough as you think you are, there is always somebody tougher and faster... This year's winner, Karl Maltzer..."

Interesting footnote: "The race requires about 370 volunteers to pull off, including 120 on the search-and rescue squad, with 600 runners competing in four distance events."

He's as tough as they come. I look forward to him running the AT again. For those who don't know who he is, a quick search of WB will fill you in.
