1. fontana to cades cove
2. cades cove to 441
3. 441 to 40 required one night stay.

this requires ALOT of driving for shuttles

*or you could hike 24hrs @ 3mph and finish in one day as stated in an earlier thread

There are about 50 loop hikes one could do to day hike the entire AT. Of course this would entail going up the mountain and down the mountain for just about everyone. But, it would put you well on your way to conquering the Smokies 900 Miler (http://www.900miler.com/).

They would be extremely long mileage days, but it could be done. The closest that the trail gets to an exit point, other than at Clingman's Dome, is about 5 miles. So, you would be looking at tacking on an additional 10+ non AT miles to some day's hikes.

here is what I would look at:

- Fontana to Russell Field, to Cades Cove 17.5
- Cades Cove to Russell Field to Derrick Knob to Tremont 22.2
- Tremont to Derrick Knob to Clingman's Dome 16.6
- Cllingman's Dome to Newfound Gap 7.7
- Newfound Gap to TriCorner to Yellow Creek Gap to Cosby Campground 24.6
- Cosby Campground to Yellow Creek Gap to Davenport Gap 17.4

As mentioned, getting off the AT means a steep downhill at the end of the day, and then a steep uphill the next morning to get back to the AT. Then you also have to look at shuttle times to/from the trail heads. If you have a support crew that, then you can have them setup at the campgrounds at Cades Cove and Cosby for those nights.
