I'm uncertain of your question, but "jell alcohol" sounds like Sterno. There are also foil pouches of alcohol fuel- gel.

Look where they sell the aluminum warming (chafing?) pans for buffets, etc. They are usually there and cost about a buck a can. Sterno is one brand, but most other brands are identical...gelled methanol.

Hi Cowhead,

I would suggest you do a boil water test outside on your back deck, before going hiking. Get a pot with one cup and a timer.

i agree with WOO, test different things out. cook your dinner on stove a couple of times. you will find that jell burns at a lower temp. its main use is warming trays on buffet lines. it is great to carry for a day hike. i still carry my sterno stand and pot. my dad bought it in 1956. still heats up a good can of beans:)

11.00 is way too much to pay. Get Sterno or make Your own:

Hi
Hand sanitizer is a form of Jelled alcohol.
When I ran out of fuel for my alcahol stove in the smokies, I used hand sanitizer in my stove.
It works

You can find the gell burners in most cooking sections at any retailer.

But usually they are more of a low heat burner, to keep things warm or to keep fondues and sauces loose. I never really seem them boil.

Yeah I gave up on that and made a cat stove, and it works great can boils 2 cups of water in about 5 mins

We buy the Gel for an outdoor fireplace.... I didn't find it was good for backpacking (and I did try it)... that and it's pricey.

I experimented with it a few years back, both inside of stoves and by itself on a piece of aluminum foil. It isn't nearly as hot as denatured alcohol. After all, it was designed for heating things which had already been cooked.
In one test I did with gelled alcohol in a pepsi-can stove the gel (2 fl. oz.) never got 16 oz. of tap water to a boil, when denatured alcohol did it in about 5.5 min. with 1 fl. oz. of fuel.
