I am looking into purchasing my first pack and find myself constantly second-guessing my decisions. Living in a small town having only one outfitter with limited packs to try, im planning on ordering online. I want a fairly large pack as im hoping to thru hike in 2010. Does anyone have any recommendations, im 5'9'', 31'' waist, about 150lbs. hoping to keep the pack 4lbs or less!

Plenty of good packs in the 3000-4000 cubic inch range at 3 pounds or so. In addition to ULA, check Six Moons Designs. For major manufacturers Osprey is pretty good.

You need to make sure you measure your back length before ordering. And don't get your pack until you get the rest of your gear. pack should be last.

Like stated above, get your torso measured first, and get all of your other gear, this will dictate the volume of pack you need.

Also, dont be too shy as to not try on a women's-specific pack, they are smaller waists and harnesses.

All the above, and look at Gossamer Gear, too.

Granite Gear Vapor Trail is another to look into.
