MILLINOCKET, Maine (AP) - Searchers who returned to the woods following the discovery of a human jaw bone believe they have found the rest of the man's remains at a campsite near Baxter State Park, officials said.
Investigators and medical examiners suspect the body is that of Robert Taylor, 57, of the Bangor area. Though Taylor was never reported missing, medical examiners believed the body had been there for months, Trooper Matt Grant of the state police said Thursday.

Searchers with dogs discovered the body Wednesday, two weeks after hikers who had pitched a tent outside the park found the jaw bone. They were exploring around the Appalachian Trail when they saw the bone and contacted authorities.

Additional remains were recovered from a weathered tent, which was staked in the ground and partially upright, Grant said. The tent also contained the remains and camping supplies were found nearby, police said.

Taylor didn't have a car, and it's unclear how he came in the area where his tent was found. The spot was about a quarter mile from the park's southern entrance and a few hundred feet from the park boundary.

"At this stage of the game, we haven't confirmed causation of death or specific time of death. A lot of this is subject to further examination of the remains by the medical examiner's office," Grant said.

The death wasn't being treated as suspicious, and police stressed the need for futher investigation and tests to confirm the identity, he said.

Taylor was not married, and he had a brother in the Bangor area. It was not known if he had a job, the trooper said.

"This thing is still an ongoing investigation. We're still looking at putting some pieces of the puzzle together," he said.
