View Full Version : Cold Mtn trailhead
I hiked to Cold Mtn NC a couple of years back and started at Daniel Boone Boy Scout camp, but I know there is a way to get there from the Blue Ridge Parkway, just don't know where? Thanks.............

From Asheville, head south on the Parkway past the Pisgah Inn. Once you pass the Graveyard Fields Trailhead you will be getting close. You can actually take the MST from here. But there is a forest road (#???) on the right, and drive up to a backcountry parking area. Just be on the look out for the Art Loeb Trail.
You can also start out in Brevard at the Davidson River campground.

Right now it is prime berry picking time from what my friends have done in the past. You may really want to get the NG Pisgah Ranger Disctrict Map. Once you get into the wilderness, it is unsigned and with lots of trail junctions.

If your just hiking in Shining Rock, the Shining rock forest service map is WAY better than the NG map. You can get it at the ranger station (and its cheaper than the NG one)
The Art Loeb Trail crosses the access road about a mile before the backcountry parking area. There is some limited parking where it crosses.

When headed to the BRP, you can stop at any of the visitor centers and get a copy of their travel planner magazine. It lists all the trails spurring off the parkway, their distances, and mileposts for the trail junction. I found that VERY helpful when I was driving along the parkway 2 weeks ago.

Elaborating a bit, he was recently back in Haywood County to help fix up Inman Chapel. This is an interesting article about a tour they lead. I was down there but unfortunately didn't attend
