Just saw a bumper sticker that read 70.3 and on the other side of the car 140.6 ????
Cannot figure out what they are referring to .

140.6 is the mileage you cover in an Iron Man Triathlon.
Half Iron Man for 70.3
2.4 mile swim, 110+ mile bike, 26.2 mile run (a marathon to finish).
I guess the ride would be 112 so the numbers add up.
Makes sense now!!!
Ironman.....isn't that what you do to train for an AT thru hike?:)

Once when I was a younger, much more fit young Marine, I ran a few "sprint" triathlons. Like a mile swim, 30 mile ride and an 10k (6.2 mile) run. They were fun.
I pondered doing an IronMan. Then after I ran a marathon, which was NOT so fun, I changed my focus, and started doing adventure races, where you're not branded a poser if you walk instead of run. LOTS more fun. I also had a big advantage over the IronMan crowd. I was a pretty solid navigator.
Now, I just walk 10-12 miles, hang my hammock to chill, and call it a day. :banana

shoot! drinkin' beer and eatin' buffets is training for the AT. it's just walkin'. nothin' too tough

That's a great catch, Bearpaw. I had not known that one (but then again, I wouldn't do an Iron Man of any kind if you paid me...well, not unless you paid me a whole lot no matter how long it took me.) We have people here in the mid-Atlantic who have similar stickers with Garden State Parkway mileage/exit numbers on them (you see them down at the Jersey shore a fair bit these days) and I just assumed when I saw a 70.3 that it was another of those silly things. I'd never guessed the real meaning.
Just goes to show how an in-group identity sticker can go unrecognized by people who don't share that culture.
A buddy of mine competes in the Ironman competitions, the amount of training he does is wild...

Only training required is a will to do it.
Should be sticker that says - it's all mental.

I was in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho a few weekends ago as I had important business meetings at headquarters on both Friday and Monday, so I didn't want to fly back to Michigan for the weekend. The Ironman was held that Sunday morning, with temps never cresting 55F under a cloudy sky that eventually started dripping. I was staying at a house atop the ridge across the river from where they started swimming at 7 am. It looked like there was a feeding frenzy from all the arms and legs splashing. Bikers were still finishing up at 5 pm, and there were runners being cheered over the loudspeakers until midnight...17 straight hours of physical exertion.
I did a half-marathon two months ago, doubt I could ever do double that plus a century on the bike and 2.4 miles in the water.
Bearpaw, who says walkers are posers? My mom has done 5 marathons, 2 running and 3 race-walking. Olympic race walkers can do an 8 minute mile.
Of course to be a REAL triathlete..you gotta wear spandex, shave your legs and have a bike worth more than the car you own. Or so it seems living in triathlete central. :-?
You'll often see 26.2 stickers as well (Marathon).

Marines to other Marines during the Marine Corps Marathon in DC. Actually "poser" would be among the nicer things. All designed to motivate of course, but it does so by ticking you off enough to chase whoever said it.
