In addition to the places Steve mentioned, there is at least one more, The Hike Inn motel, run by very friendly Jeff and Nancy Hoch. They offer a section hiker special rate of $30.00 per night; also, if you get there by 5PM, they'll shuttle you for free to nearby Robbinsville for supplies, which may mean you won't have to send a maildrop at all; this might help if you're pressed for time. They also provide rides to and from the Trailhead.

If you're not planning to overnight there, they'll still hold maildrop parcels for non-guests, but I believe there is a charge for this service; cal them to confirm this (it's free if you stay there).

Otherwise, the P.O. at Fontana Dam is your best bet for a maildrop; make sure you include plenty of food for the Smokies as the store at Fontana Village has limited re-supply options.

For more information to confirm hours of operation, call the Fontana Dam P.O. at 828-498-2315; the Hike Inn can be reached at 828-479-3677 or www.thehikeinn.com

The Hike Inn offers the best combination at Fontana: Overnight accomodations, transportation into town for resupply, and to the trailhead as well. Friendly and supportive hosts. I had stove and refrigerator in the room I stayed in. I sent some winter gear home from there, and they helped with the packing and took care of the mailing.

No Steve, not a pro, I've just hiked the area a lot more than you have.

I always walk down to the marina and call the shuttle to the village...

ask for the hiker rate.
