I just heard that the secret shelter is closed. Reportedly, the area still open for camping & water is avalable.

I hate to hear this, even tho I won't be in NY for quite a few years, it looked like a nice place. I strongly suspect, like many neat places along the AT, it was closed due to over use &/or misuse by hikers.

Olistery Pavillion comes to mind. In 83 Hikers were welcomed to STAY there, now its "OFF LIMITS TO HIKERS!" We cant even go near it.

I was lucky enough to reach the O'Lystery Community Picnic Area (I think that was the "official name") the evening of one their monthly get togethers. When they saw me they fed me like I was a king. I still have good memories about the people there.

i think the secret shelter is more geared towards winter. It was closed when I was there in May. The place is amazing though!!

Not that it makes a ton of diffrence but I believe the secret shelter is in NJ not NY. If it's closed it really makes not diffrence at all.

It's in NY, but you leave the AT for it in NJ.

The secret shelter in New Jersey is not much of a secret since it is written up in the hiker books. The secret shelter in Vermont is much more of a secret. I hope it stays out of the books. It is a nice place.

There's a real secret shelter in Maine, on a long abandoned section of the AT. An overseer of the section once asked me if it was still there. It was. But I didn't tell him. Nor will I tell you where. That's the thing about secrets. If you tell folks, it's no longer secret.

A few fishermen know this particular secret shelter's existence. They walk the stream that "runs through it." Old time hikers may guess. But, if so, then they should do what I did, go and look. It's easy. Bushwhack an overgrown trail, chase along a stream, circle a beaver flowage, and there it will be!

You're a cruel man, Weary. I want to find it for myself. I wish now I bought that old Maine AT guide on ebay.

As of mid November 2010, the shelter has been moved to smaller, less amenity filled shelter on the same property. Shower stall was still unlocked but original secret shelter is locked up and a smaller one is now available for us.

It's not me that can't keep a secret, it's all those other people I tell!

Going NOBO in VT, there was a side trail just before Big Branch that lead to another "secret shelter". There was a hiker party there that day. It was early in the day when I reached that point-so I just kept hiking.

There is a secret shelter in Vermont - it's just south of Killington / Rutland, I think - I just heard about it - maybe near Churchill Scott?

Is the one in Vermont that you are referring to on Killington mountain? If it is its no secret in the winter as tons of people ski and snowboard right up to it. Not that familiar with Vermont so I could also be way off.

By the way I live in Warwick NY which is right over the NY/NJ boarder and the trail runs right by my house. I hike this area of the A.T. all the time. Anyone feel like giving a hint to a local. Next time I have nothing to do I will take a hike and see if I can find it.

On my thru hike last year, I stopped for a break at this shelter and met the owner. As of this date the shelter is still open. I was contacted earlier today by the owner and this was his reply.

"The shelter is on my farm and is open as it has been since 94 to all serious long distance hikers well water and shower available for hiker use"

I assume this is the shelter 0.4 mi south of Goodrich road.

I think it it will be much more appreciated since the Mayor's house has been closed.

Is the shower warm? I think the only warm shower I had between Dalton and the Mayor's house was at East Mountain retreat.

The Secret Shelter is in Warwick and I am under the impression the ATC is trying to buy the acreage so it may be closed. Property is lovely and there is a sign that says "You need water now" before getting to it.
