View Full Version : Canisters - Butane/propane

Hi all,

A question regarding the fuel canisters for canister stoves - this may seem a bit mickey-mouse, but coming from the UK, it's something I need to ask!

Over here, our butane/propane blowtorches use the same fuel canister coupling as canister stoves (pocket rocket etc.). This means that in small towns without gear shops you can often still find the fuel in a hardware store. Obviously a blowtorch canister is a different shape and pretty unstable, but with some ingenuity (dig a hole to support it!) it works, and is much cheaper.

So 1) are the couplings the same in the US? 2) How widespread are blowtorch canisters in hardware stores?

This isn't actually an AT specific question, more general for hiking elsewhere in the US (particularly PCT); I'm aware there's outfitters near the AT that would stock the real canisters.

Thanks in anticipation,
Dave

PS If you really want to make a stove burn, you can get acetylene canisters with the right coupling over here!
