What size pack for a Sobo fall season thru-hike. Looks like the 100 mile wilderness is going to take 9 days- that's a lot of food for a 19 year old- a lot of pack space.

At 19, if you're in good shape, it'll probably take you less than nine days.

For a pack, I'd look at those in the 3200-4000 cubic inch range.

On the A.T. these days, the most popular packs are those from Osprey, ULA, and Gregory. For more information on their products and specs, check out the company websites.

I'd suggest buying all your other gear first, and then go to your local outfitter with all your gear, food, water, and fuel and try on different packs.

I thru hiked with a 6,200 cu. in. pack, so it is certainly possible, but I think Jack is on track with suggesting something in the 3,500 cu. in. range. Remember, the more food you carry and the bigger your pack, the more calories you burn carrying it!

I'd look at a ULA Catalyst, but you'd better do it before the 31st, and hope they have your size in stock.

I took an Osprey Aether 70 (4200 ci) which I would do again but honestly in the end I have to say it was too big. There were times, like the 100 Mile Wilderness, where I apprecieated the extra capacity & I would use this pack again if I was to do another thru hike. Like metioned earlier...3500-4000 would be best. As far as taking 9 days...that is what I would plan. My wife and I were in excellent shape but the horrible conditions caused us to take 9 instead of 7 like we planned. You could most likely do it quicker being so young but just sayin'......best to be be prepared.
