The Solemates, a married couple that thru-hiked together! For as much as some folks preach about how 'impossible' that is, good job to this couple that did it! http://www.trailjournals.com/entry.cfm?trailname=1737

Here is a couple who also finished together in July in 2001. They started in January and they both were 70 years old!

Here's some more love on the trail. When one threw in the towel, the other found it too unbearable going on without her. They met on the trail and are now engaged. They may not have found Katahdin, but they found each other.

There was also another couple (better left unnamed) that got hitched while on the trail last year. Not sure if the ceremony was legit, judging from the dreadlocked ceremony photos.

Also, Nocona (98) and Bald Eagle (95) got hitched. Not sure if they met on the trail, but it seemed that way. Trailjournals.com

when we can finally do it, we'll be doing it as a couple (unless i'm widowed by then). i can't imagine doing a thru-hike without my husband. short trips are different, but 5 or so months? no way.

We hiked in '01 as a married couple. We saw so many beautiful things and met so many wonderful people. Experiencing that alone and not being able to share that with someone you love the most would have been unfulfilling. The journey made us stonger and we continue to go on backpacking trips, albeit much shorter ones, together.

I met my wife 4 years ago on a Carolina Mtn Club day hike. Found out we both liked hot fudge brownies with ice cream. Married now for 3 years. We hike & backpack here in the mountains on weekends and section hike the AT together.

;) Happy Trails,
Chip

For some people, hiking solo can be quite fulfilling. I'm a section hiker who has hiked with others and alone, and both are wonderful in their own ways. It's great to see couples sharing their adventures, and someday I hope to find a man with that same sense of adventure. If not then I'll enjoy life anyway. Being on your own is all what you make of it.

I saw my name mentioned here and decided to reply even thought this post is quite old by now....yes, indeed. Bald Eagle and I met online at Wingfoot's original www.trailplace.com (http://www.trailplace.com) Web site (now defunct), then met in person when he drove me out to Springer to begin my thru-hike. I thru-hiked the AT solo, which was awesome and I wouldn't trade it for the world....but since then, we attempted the PCT in '00, had to quit, got married and thru-hiked the PCT in '04 (www.trailjournals.com/nocona2 (http://www.trailjournals.com/nocona2)) together. It's very different and much more challenging to thru-hike as a couple, but the rewards are bigger, too.

Nocona, How are you and Bald Eagle doing? I hiked with Bald Eagle for a while on the AT in 95. We communicated a bit around the time of your first PCT attempt then fell out of touch. Tell BE I was asking about him.

OK, next time I'll do a bit more research. Trailplace is NOT defunct! Still there, but different.

Iceman, I just told Eagle you wrote a reply. He says a big hello! We were in Franklin last weekend and Eagle called Sleeping Bear to reminisce about '95, which was the last time Bald Eagle had been in Franklin!

Had both good and bad experiences in hiking and travelling as a couple.

Started the AT with a girlfriend (at the time). That failed miserably, and we soon imploded. She quit, I finished. We broke up.

Last year I paddled the Mississippi River with another girlfriend (now my fiance!) I can't imagine doing that trip with anyone else.

Hiking as a couple requires much more patience, but the rewards are pretty cool too as long as you don't kill each other in the process.

We're not thru's, but are section hiking the trail and thru-hiking life together. For us, it would be a great loss not to share the day-to-day happenings as we hike - we are soulmates. I would image that other relationships might have differing dynamics that would make this possible or more desirable.
