Winton Porter, the owner of Mountain Crossings at Neel Gap, has written a book called "Just Passin' Thru" that will be out in October but is available at a pre-publication deal now. You can pre-order a signed copy and save a few bucks at his website at http://www.mountaincrossings.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=770&HS=1. (http://www.mountaincrossings.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=770&HS=1)

I had the pleasure of reading the first five chapters of this book in draft form and I've been salivating for the rest ever since. I understand some WB AT legends are in it...

only teachers need to be told what they are. the exact allgarythm that exists in positive proof of our boy at neels success is that we love him now. no one who loves the book can ad to our appreciation admiration and respect. the mans a trail. leading to our hearts. hes the red carpet of atdom. when it rollls out for you, you have taken the first step to becoming the fith rase. when i need moral guidence i call johnney thunder. when i need scolding i call gypsy and lwolf. when i need bibletalk i call phatchap. i never call winton. cause hes a givein. all he offers is out their for us all all the time. next feb 18th if all goes well.......i will inhale his armpit smell deeply and hug him too. cause hikers aint no joke. no joke at all. oxoxoxooxoxoxoxoxoxoxmatty.

What is it with shipping all the time?..... if Whiskey & cheese was shipped you would gladly pay $9

Too bad shipping is almost $9.00.

I use Amazon Prime ($75/yr) and get free 2 day shipping on everything. But then I order at least 2 dozen books/year plus many other items that qualify for the free shipping. I currently have several books on my pre-order list. If you order items totaling $25 shipping is free as well but that can end up costing more than paying for the Prime membership because you'll always be forced into ordering more stuff than you really wanted in order to get free shipping, so it's going to cost you more in the end. I'm pretty certain, though, that Amazon wouldn't charge $8 or $9 to ship a relatively small $10 book.

The weekend of Oct. 16th.

Hmmm...Amazon says the release date is Dec 3rd.((they ship preorders to your address to be rec'd on the official release date. I've ordered literally dozens of books this way and it has always been so). Publishing houses get very very uppity about selling books before the official release date. Winton may want to to get his copies out there and get the money for them early on but the publishing house will find out about it and they can stop it. I worked for Barnes and Noble for 2 years and B. Dalton Books for a year and we were well aware of "release dates." Sell a book one day ahead of time and the publishing house and hq were on the phone to halt sales. He may believe he's above it because it's his book, but he'll find out from the publishing house that he has to adhere to the rules like everyone else. I also knew a manager at a Target store that sold a DVD hours before the "release" date. Target hq and the DVD publishing house were on the phone within minutes. You are being watched.

Agreed. Buying lots of books don't make one knowledgable... or wiser, reading comprehension being what it is... especially in some cases. :)

Just talked to Winton. His publisher is releasing the book in Oct. Amazon is listing the holiday release date as Dec. The publisher is Menasha Ridge Press. I hope this clears things up.

Ah, I don't mind. I often carry a full paperback book with me on trail. (Actually, usually I carry issued of Fantasy & Science Fiction.) And sometimes I do the usual and tear off parts of the book as I go.

Just got my signed copy in the mail yesterday and stayed up til 3 in the morning reading. Will finish it up tonight after work.

Yeah, it's that good, and is the best A.T. book to come out in years.

This would make a great Christmas or holiday present for any hiker you know and be sure to get an extra copy to keep.

I really did enjoy the book.:) I end to ended it in a couple of days. Having worked there and knowing most of the characters and liberties took made it that much more interesting.;) I also find it interesting that WP described some of the same people/places- in much the same way as BB, but w/o the backlash.
