can tents be set up outside the shelters in maryland?
Yes. I just hiked the whole state and tented at the shelter sites. There are also a couple of sites where there is only tent camping.

yes there are few spots pass the shelters that make good sites to camp, and the hiker's camp ground has a warm shower

That sounds so macho to those that don't know there is less than 40 miles of the AT in Maryland! :)

I think the question might be whether you can camp outside designated camping areas. I have never seen signs prohibiting that.
Actually I hiked it in only 15 hours but who's bragging.
Sorry to the hammock hangers but don't you guys pretty much have anywhere you want to camp? I love the hammock idea but after trying it for 2 nights I couldn't go one more without sleep. I'm a side/stomach sleeper. Any suggestions?
