Interesting story, but it's back story that's the most interesting. I think the salient points can be condensed.

1. Respect your environment.
2. Bears are not pets.
3. Don't feed them.
4. Really. Don't feed them.

I have heard numerous stories of experienced backpackers feeding bears, many on this forum.

There are many people who keep and/or cook food in their shelters in bear country, A lot of people on this forum.
Some who have thrown food at or near bears.
Some who have abandoned their food bags or backpacks because they were afraid the curious bear would eat them if they didn't.

And many other weird compulsions, like running away from a bear or climbing a tree.

There is a saying here in Michigan. A fed bear, is a dead bear. Never a good idea.

He was looking at the *dinner* menu instead of the breakfast menu, simple mistake.

Thanks for finding that gem of a story.... Clearly it could be elevated to a Darwin Award!

Sad deal. The news reports here said the woman had dementia, but had fed bears for years. A fed bear is a dead bear. Not what the woman wanted, but what she did.
