View Full Version : The baddest: 135 miles,120 degrees,23 hrs
From CNN, a story about the Badwater Ultra, which is widely considered the toughest ultramarathon. It starts in Death Valley, 280 ft below sea level, traverses 135 miles through the desert, and ends at Whitney Portals, which I think is the highest point on the PCT.
This year's winning time was a freaking incredible 23 hrs. 30 min.

Edited to say that mrc is exactly right -- it's not on the PCT. My mistake.
Thanks for the link. FYI, Whitney Portal is not on the PCT. Forester Pass is the highest pt on the PCT.
All who finished the race were unavailable for comment!
While I give mad props to anyone who does this race, I have NO desire to race on blacktop for that long. :O
Other people feel the same way..in fact, using other route ideas and exploring on his own, Blister Free came up with this route:

(Same gentleman who came up with he Grand Enchantment Trail)
This route is on my (ever growing) TO DO list.
Hmm..wonder what I have going on in Late Sept/early Oct? :D

It used to be 146 miles. Guess they had a relo that shortened it.

What's your options for water resupply on the way? Seems like you'd have to pack a lot of water through the first 100 miles or so.

It used to go the top of Mt. Whitney. The USFS did not like the idea of that many people going to the top at one time. (From what I understand; I could be wrong.)

Running on the Sun (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0236702/) was a very good documentary movie on the race.
