im 24 and i plan doing my first solo NOBO thru hike in 2010. i would like my family to meet me at the katahdin sign at the end of my hike. my question is this... my father has a bad knee and has trouble walking over rough terrain. is there a road that goes up to the sign or nearby where it would be close enough for him to walk? any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance

The closest he could get before hiking is 5.2 miles. Then it is a pretty rugged climb including some rock scrambles to get to the sign.

He could very well hike with you to start your hike on Springer. That summit is only 1 mile from a forest service road crossing and the hike would be much, much less strenuous than climbing Katahdin.

It is wonderful to have family involved in your hike. Best of luck!!!
