Muir Trail Ranch - approximately 110 miles from Whitney Portal.
Vermillion Valley Resort - approximately 131 (?) miles from Whitney Portal
Reds Meadow - approximately 163 miles from Whitney Portal

Me and Doodah Man used Muir Trail Ranch and Reds Meadow during our JMT hike and it was plenty to get us through to the finish.

There are other options but these are the main ones. You can hike side/connector trails and hitch into a few towns along the way as well.

The Muir trail Ranch is only a short hike off the trail. Go to their site for specific directions on how to send your re-supply. Vermilloin resort is a 20 min or so boat ride away from the trail, a boat that the resort runs a couple trips a day the length of T. Edison Lake. You can hike into it from the south via the Bear Creek trail and the cut-off trail. This is a gradual down hill hike along a beautiful stream or creek with great trout fishing. The cut-off trail is first steep, then downhill to the road. The drawback is that the trailhead is a 3 mile road walk to the resort. The Bear Ridge trail is steep down and horse travelled. Take the boat! You can also hike in or out via Goodale Pass, but that is not an easy hike.
The store at Red Meadows where supplies can be sent is very close to the trail; only yards away, with a grill right there, too. All of these locations are hiker-friendly.

Here are answers to FAQs about the JMT.

2009 the Muir Trail Ranch charges $50 for drop mailings and they do sell large size gas canisters used on most popular stoves. They have a couple of full hiker boxes, too, food and misc. gear like batteries.

Going north, you really only need one re-supply point: Muir Trail Ranch at mile 110. Note that it closed Sept 17 this year. Reds Meadow makes a convenient stop 53 miles further on so you don't have such a heavy pack climbing out of MTR to Selden and Silver Passes.

Note that the tiny store at Muir Trail Ranch does not sell any edible items - only hard goods. They do however, offer internet access ($10 for 15 minutes) but have only one computer available. The hiker boxes (actually barrels) at MTR are ONLY available to hikers who are picking up their own re-supply buckets there; don't walk in and expect to rumage through them.

MTR sells Esbit tablets (the only near-trail resupply point that does) and gas canisters for most propane/butane stoves. Esbit tablets are also available at the Mt Whitney Hostel in Lone Pine and at the Whitney Portal store.
