Yup - had to be said - I was cutting up one for a project and discovered they just are not fire proof. Makes you rethink taking candles into the tent no matter how safe you think they are.... Well In a pinch it makes a wet wood fire starter!

I think we should all test many other " backup fire starters " and now we have use for 3 boxes of unknown gear:D

I been kicking arounda little....just had surgery on Wednesday so there is still a vicatin coma slowing me down....making a corn flour chicken stew with veggies and potatos I picked out of the garden.

Everything takes me forever, but I got all day:D

u may notice (as of 2 hours ago(, that this isn't a "hot topic", yet questions about water are.

Its Ok - just getting the word out, sort of like using a hand sanitizer while smoking.

I got an issue of Field & Stream in the mail and they did an article about all the ways you can make a fire in an emergency....one way was by filling a condom up with water...and then something about the way the sun is...and anywho, it worked. Amazingly!

I prefer to cary a knife and one of those steel striker thingies and cotton balls with vasalene on them.....

OH, the magazine said that when in an emergency, you can burn your cotton undies. It works well...but how many of ya really hike in cotton...hmmm

I would rather try for 2 hours to get a fire going, opposed to 2 min. than freeze to death once i left...

please clarify "catch fire". did it immediately go up like a vasoline-covered cotton ball or did you have to hold a flame under it for 5, 10 seconds?

Wags - like vasaline. in a second or two, but a consistant burn. That peice would have taken 5 minutes to dissappear. The point is if you were sleeping on it you wouldn't wake up.

And I'm sure that it generates all sorts of toxic gases while it burns!
