Pack as much crap as you can into pack because you most likely will not listen to anyone's advice here.
The only way to do a thru hike and learn what not to carry is the hard way.
Just grab a pack and other gear and put one foot in front of the other and start walking.

Go backpacking.
Figure out how it went.
Go backpacking longer.
Figure out how it went.
Repeat until you're ready.
Just go and hike the darn thing. You're 21, and it's an easy trail.
Do some basic research. Don't over think and over plan the thing like so many new hikers.

Like suggested above, do some weekend backpacking and experimenting with the gear you like until you get the "right stuff" for you. You won't know what that is until you get out in the woods with the wrong stuff and have to re-think what to do next time.
