First of all I apologize for my English.
I recently discovered the AT in the Bill Bryson's book, and since I'm an outdoor and hiking lover and was recently considering visit USA again soon, I was wondering if hiking the trail could be an original way to visit my preferred destination: Maine.

Other than documenting myself about AT, I wondered if there is some other italian here with the same idea.

Ciao.

In case you didn't figure out from the book, hiking the entire AT takes 5-6 months. If you don't have that much time to spend, you could look at hiking part of the trail and ending in Maine.

I spent a week and a half in Italy... beautiful country!

Ho vissuto in Sicilia per quattro anni vicino a Mt. Etna. Vi prego di inviarmi un privato MSG e risponderò a qualsiasi domande che avete. Ho solo parlare un po'italiano ora perché sono stato torna in America per otto anni.

Thanks for underlining that, I know AT is a 2100 miles hike and takes 5-6 months, but I'm pretty sure I will not have so much time :p, moreover my visa would expire far before I could even think about reaching Mt. Katahdin... I could aways plan a Mexican stop over.. who knows.. :D

I'm very attracted by the "100-miles wildness" section, but I'm bit scared about not having the "training" in AT thru-hikers usually have at that point of the trail. But, as I said, I'm at the very beginning in the stage of even thinking about this challenge..

At the moment I'm reading this:

This has most of the planning materials you would need--maps, etc.

If you want to read more accounts written by hikers, try this:

Good luck with your hike!

We call that damning with faint praise.

It took me a while to understand what this sentence means, so thanks.. now my English is slightly better the before :D, also if I'm pretty sure I won't recall it when needed.

There is a discussion here:

about "faint praise" and "feigned praise" :p

Don't worry about it. You can find many places in Italy where the mountains are bigger than the AT, so you can "train" near home. There may be differences between hiking the AT and trekking in Italy, but you can read about those differences.
A few differences:
Winter can be severe (-40C = -40F), especially in the White Mountains in New Hampshire and in Maine. The White Mountains can be very windy all year.
In June New England has black flies that bite. Maine can be very unpleasant in June when they are bad. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_fly Carry DEET (insect repellent). There are also mosquitoes, which usually come out later.
September and October can be very beautiful in New England and New York when the leaves are changing color.

Come and hike here, you'll have fun.

Ciao

The Hundred Mile Wilderness is easier than southern Maine, You just have to carry more food (8-9 days' worth).
I did a few short (20-30 mile) hikes last year before I did the Wilderness. If you are in reasonable shape and take enough food you can do it.

I live about 35 miles from Venice, so if you are planning to stop over there, just le me know..
My plans fot AT are not so clear, at the moment, I'm gathering as many information as I can to help we decide when/where to hike, but I'll for sure report my choice here.
