Well I am not sure about why this is a big shock. If you loose the trail (or whatever path you are following) and backtrack a bit but don't seem to find it moving out in ever increasing circles is a great way to locate it while keeping a point of reference for you to get back to where you began if needed.

Hmmm, interesting stuff. The "one leg longer than the other" may help explain the informal survey I did on my thru-hike this year regarding leg pain.

I began asking NOBO's if they had leg pain which one hurt. The majority said the LEFT leg. Then when I started running into SOBO's in New England I asked them the same question. You guessed it! The majority of the SOBO's complained of their RIGHT leg hurting!

Someone could probably apply for a grant to investigate the hypothesis further.........
