Saturday Sept. 5 my son and myself hiked up to Yellow Mountain gap from the parking area at Hampton Creek Cove State Natural Area near Roan Mountain State Park in Tennessee. This three and a half mile one way hike up to the gap and the Overmountain shelter passes through some old Tennessee farmland that is being maintained as a working farm by the state. This route also follows the historical route of the overmountain men as they passed over the Roan Highlands. The trail is well marked and maintained and is a fairly challenging, rewarding way to reach the ridgeline. This is a very beautiful area that is well worth hiking.
