Hiking from Fontana to Davenport September 23-27...can I expect to see any displays of color? I know the Smokies has some wildflowers that bloom in the late summer and fall.
Thanks!

Some of the maples were already starting to show color last Saturday in the higher elevations. Should be going pretty decent by the EOM.

Re. wildflowers, you might see some purple asters. There's plenty of them in Shenandoah so perhaps they're in the Smokies as well.

The theme was purple and gold when I was up in the Deep Creek area on Labor Day weekend. Asters, Goldenrod, Gentian, Lobelia and a surprising number of others. The fungus was the real show stopper. I saw all kinds of cool shrooms. Fall colors were already giving previews, especially the sourwoods and maples.

Should be a great time for a hike.
