My young friend Brian Wilkerson, AKA... Dumb Luck has passed away. He was 27 years old and was diagnosed with luekemia a few weeks before he was to start his 2004 thruhike attempt. For six months of brutal chemo he was able to keep fighting because he still wanted to go hike. He had found something that he really enjoyed and a community that he was happy to be getting to know.
I will be sure that his family gets any messages that are posted here or sent to my email address.

I had the chance to meet him last year on one occassion at Miss Janet's house. Can't say that I really knew him. He did seem quiet and polite though. What a terrible story, but I guess we can all learn from this. As we hike don't ever take it for granted.

"24 hours or maybe 60 good years, it's really not that long of stay"

Miss Janet, I'm so sorry to hear about your friend Brian. My sister
died at 26 of cancer, and since that time I realize that life is precious
and each birthday is a gift. May God bless and comfort you, and may
sweet memories always endure.

Even though not many of us knew him, his death touches us all, because it reminds us of our own mortality. For however short the time, he was part of the hiking community.
