If that hole is about 1.5 inches wide, it is probably a northern flying squirrel box. There are several types of nesting boxes on Roan, including the saw-whet owl (described as an absurdly tame little owl), and barred owl.
Once went looking for a saw-whet on Mt. Rogers with a bird census group, but found none. If you make tapping noises on the nesting tree of a saw-whet, it might hop out and come to you.

It is not a bat house or bat box.

I agree with Goncho. It looks like a Flying Squirrel box, but what gets me is the screen at the bottom. That is close as I can get.

Snipes are ground dwellers
and bat boxes have entrance holes in the bottom.
HHHmmmmm......

It is not a bat house or bat box.

Entry is too large for a bat box. Plans I got had entry bottom back.

Unless you got some Laaarge bats down there.

It's a bat box.

Small bats can use large holes as well as small ones.

Most of the one's I've seen don't have the chicken wire on the bottom and no sidehole entrance, but it's a bat box.

Probably also has slats inside made out of plywood for them to hang upside down in.

I am not an expert but every bat house I have seen has an entry from the bottom. More slit like than a hole.

I'd have to say either squirrels or snipe.

Hey, it's snipe season here in CO. Anyone wanna go snipe huntin'?:)

Its very possibly one of these creatures. They are close to extinction and I hear there is a program to bring them back. Its a rare snaggletoothed finch. Don't stick your finger in the box they bite!

Don't listen to Monkeyboy, he's just a poop flinger. :D

They might design bat boxes like this in florida - enough said - , but that is a flying squirrel box.

That's because we use flying squirrels for skeet practice.

I thought that was the new suggested shelter for hikers. I hear the 'eco-nuts' are wanting to lessen the human impact on the environment, thusly, smaller shelters.
