So i have my warbonnet black bird hammock (YESSS!!!!), WARBONNET YETI UQ (OH YEA!), and my jrb no sniveller TQ. I have my 4 oz jason klass water filter, i have my maccat deluxe spinn tarp, soon to be aarn fetherlite freedom pack.

But what i really need is clothes, as of right now all i have is cotton. I am a fan of umbrellas, so i hope to encorporate that into my gear decisions.

Info you need to know to give me advice:

- I am thru'ing the AT
- i will be doing it in 2 secitions, over 2 summers begining in may through early august
- I need appropriate clothing for the trip (this includes shells, insulating layers, socks, shoes, etc) please give me your input, thanks.

golite umbrella is your friend. few will understand it, but it was clutch for me on my hike.

i like smartwool, get a t shirt for hiking and a longsleeve for camp.
maybe one extra layer to be safe.
then an insulation layer, fleece or insulated.
i found the sierra designs microlight pants and top to be great for the rain i encountered. works great with the umbrella. the pants are great in camp.

i hiked in silk leggins if needed, but always my thin nylon starter shorts from wal mart.

Last time I checked, WalMart still has a bunch of Starter brand shirts available for $5-$7 bucks. Great non-cotton light shirts.

For most of the trail in summer, you really don't need much clothing. A couple of T-shirts, shorts, a few pairs of socks. Plus a windshirt to pull on. I carry a microfleece top, but mostly use it as a pillow at night.

Smartwool has nice shirts but sometimes they wear out. Really depends if you nab a good one or not.

Need convertible nylon pants.

Need convertible nylon pants.

While convertible pants are nice for some people (most?), I wouldn't say you need them. Many of us do the dorky (but effective) shorts and long-underwear combo when it is cool out and throw on rain pants when it is cold out.

FWIW here is my basic clothing list for three-season CO hiking (mid-late June to mid-late Sept).

CLOTHING ON SELF:

Long sleeve shirt
Nylon Shorts
Coolmax Running Socks
Bandanna
Boonie Style Hat
Running/Trail shoes

CLOTHING PACKED:

Montbell Light Shell Jacket
Coolmax Running Socks
GoLite Wisp
Montbell UL Rainpants
Lt. Wt. Polypro bottoms
Lt. Wt. Polypro Long Sleeve Top
Fleece Socks
Exp. Wt. Polypro Balaclava Military Surplus Wool Glove Liners
ULA Mist

NOTE: This gear reflects my "hike all day/camp little" style.

For shoulder season hiking (late Spring/early summer or late Fall/early winter) I'll usually take a heavier shell, an additional hat and a Thermawrap for approx a 1.5 lb weight penalty.

So i decided on the following:

Royal robins convertible pants (already owned)
Smartwool long sleeve zip (warm baselayer)
icebreaker tech t 140 (cool baselayer)
icebreaker briefs
Patagonia houdini
Montbell thermawrap
Driducks
smartwool adrenaline x3
will buy head/hand gear later
newbalances (already owned)

How does that look?

A cotton shirt can really be nice when it is hot.

only use driducks if you are extremely careful. the product is flimsy.
is the houdini part of your in camp magic show for entertainment?

where do you plan on starting in may? that may influence your clothing.

i was hiking in virginia at the end of this past april, doing a long section from springer, and by late april i had sent home my windshirt, insulated vest, extra layer, gloves.

then, i was hiking with all of the following clothing, including clothing worn:

1 wool t shirt, 1 wool longsleeve, both thin, sierra designs microlight top.

1 pair nylon shorts, 1 pair silk leggings, 1 sierra designs microlight pants

1 pair extra socks. because i hiked in chaco sandals, i had less sock maintainence.

oh, and 1 golite umbrella.
