Here's a link to a slide show of 9 bear incidents in Colorado. There is a link next to each slide to the full story. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/09/15/bear-stories-which-colora_n_287026.html?slidenumber=0#slide_image
Several of these I find scary: house breakins, bear spending the afternoon outside a McDonalds.
Several involve humans over reacting.
Some are just funny.
Apparently around Aspen, Colorado, people don't secure their garbage in bear proof containers and they need to do so.

There have been similar situations in NY State, but they are not so serious yet -- no attacks or fatalities.

Oh, it is not just garbage containers. The bear broke the car window and ate the entire car seat where the kids had touched the back of the front seat with kid juice hands. Ate it down to the metal frame including the foam. Then got into the cabin because of the door handles. They were disabled access handles. Easy to open. The bear tore the place apart and loved cocoa powder and seven up. They changed the doors. These people I know are native Colorado foks, long trail hikers, and very careful. No trash outside at all and nothing left in the cars. The bear did not mess with the grill because they keep it so pristine. That one bear finally ended up getting killed when it went into another neighbor's home with someone in it. This was two or three years ago outside of Glenwood Springs.

We've been having bear problems in FL, also! This bear came roaring out of the woods and started stomping on my campfire and started yelling at me!!

I think the problem is that if anyone in the area is not careful, they are training the bear to look for food at houses. So the careful people get the problems caused by others who are not careful. Sadly, the bear often is killed.

Nice one, Gray_Blazer!
