Hi everyone, can anyone please tell me where a one day hike north from US19E would end.How far is it to Dennis cove.I have some hiker friends that want to do a day hike(no more than 10 miles) and we are triing to figure out where they would leave the trail. To which road crossing would I shuttle them?
Thanks,

19E to Dennis Cove is 19.3 miles. May be abit long for a day hike depending on the condition and experience of the group. I have not hiked this section so know nothing of the elevation changes.

19E to Walnut rd is 6.9 miles You will need to look at a map to find the locatoion of walnut road. It is between 19E and Dennis Cove.

Going the other direvtion 19E to Carvers Gap is 13.4 miles.

You might also see that on the map as Walnut Mountain Road.

Carvers gap to 19E would be a good hike for a long day..(oct will have shorter days) but it can be really cold up there in oct...i was on top of Roan the forst week of Oct (2001?) and it was like 10 degrees and wind blowing and ice and ice and snow. the road got closed.

How important is it to hike this section? Carver's Gap to 19E is 13.9 miles with about 2400' of climb. This could be shortened by leaving the trail near Doll Flats, but the trail has been relocated on this section and I couldn't be sure how to give direction. The old trail turned a sharp left near or at the Flats while an old woods road went straight ahead. I kept straight ahead and missed the turn last hike there. I realized my mistake after a 100 yds and stopped to rest. A school group came by on their way to a bus parked not far away; I could hear an engine starting not long after they came by.
If you can't find info on this shortcut, the trip to 19E from the Flats is downhill on improved trail.

Actual mileage from 19E to Dennis Cove Road is 23.6 miles, not 19.3

Actual mileage from 19E to Walnun Mountain Road is 10.2 miles, not 6.9

hasn't there been some re-routing in that area?

Of course Steve, we worked on it, remember?

My databook lists Denis cove to 19E at 21.5 and Walnut Mountain Road o 19E at 8.6, so with three sets of numbers, which is correct?

Not sure myself. My OLD trail description gives 6.6 mi. for 19E to Walnut and the relo (http://www.appalachiantrail.org/hike/updates/relos.html#sub4) adds about 2 mi. according to ATC website. Should be about 8.6. Maybe the relo adds more than that.

The ATC map of the relo shows that it goes back into NC; the Tenn. Eastman site shows it veering off short of the state boundary.

The figures I cited were taken from the 2004 Data Book, which is the most accurate source I know of....unless, of course, there have been additional re-routes or changes since its publication.
