What type of dog boots does your dog wear? Does he/she wear their boots though out the day or only when have foot problems? I have a pair of "DUKES" I carry for emergencies, but I have been looking at boots by "Neo-Paw" for all day use. I guess my concern in using boots for all day use is that dogs cool though their pads. I have a set of ruffwear 3-d barkin boots(original design). My dogs wear them sometimes during winter, road salt can be harsh on the pads. I've also used them to paw injuries, they start to smell like human hiking shoes after a few days of use though.

I've read reviews were they say the older version of barking boots fit better than the newer ones. And I agree with you on foul smelling boots after a few days.

how often does one see thru-hiking dogs wearing boots? i usually put 'em on my dog in the winter snow and ice - and on the shale trails out west -- but on the AT?? do you think it a necessity?

I don't think boots ar necessary on the AT. heck, we don't use them in AK unless it is COLD and the trails r bad. dogs don't much like them and will just take them off. They have plenty tuff feet in general
