Grand Canyon National Park (AZ)
Rangers Respond To Unfounded Emergency Locator Call

At 1:30 a.m. on the morning of September 2nd, the GEOS Emergency Response Center in Houston notified dispatch of a SPOT personal satellite tracker 911 activation that had been received from the park. The location coordinates placed the device along the Tanner Trail, approximately three miles from the trailhead. An investigation revealed that the registered owner was associated with a backcountry permit holder who had extensive hiking experience in the park. A trail response was begun at first light, just prior to the launch of the NPS helicopter with additional personnel. A ranger arrived on scene to find three people asleep in their tents and in no need of assistance. One of the hikers, who was on her first hike into Grand Canyon, claimed to have become alarmed during the night when her group ran out of water and she subsequently heard “odd” respiratory noises emanating from the leader of the group as he slept. At this point, the hiker decided that the group was in trouble, activated her SPOT messenger device, then promptly went back to sleep without making any contact with her hiking companions. The group ultimately abandoned further plans for their hike and returned to the rim. The Tanner Trail is exposed, with little shade and no water for the entire nine miles of the hike to the Colorado River. Following subsequent interviews with the involved hikers, the park decided not to take further action. [Submitted by Ken Phillips, Chief, Emergency Services]

Good case for hiking alone.

I was at GCNP during this time and the rangers were actively searching for lost hikers. It is good to know - it worked. It is bad to know - users were incapable of using it correctly.

How can someone set off a search and then just walk away?

TheKO, The U.S. Forest Service in Colorado website says it is statutory law, if not an emergency, you get to pay the costs of the rescue.

I had read courts started handing out "costs" of the rescue.

SPOT was the first available for "the lower 48".

I do know the PLB was not available in the 48 contigous states (the lower 48) until, perhaps, this year.

I have been an advocate of allowing the PLB not only in Alaska and on the ocean.

I have been a racing sailor Division R, YRA San Francisco Bay and ocean.

I also have an amateur radio license, for decades advocating development of a TFR "trail friendly radio" with emergency beacon, GPS location and a message.

I have started to "get the word out" we need to report emergencies, not some inconvenience.

I started with my website. I am in the forum.

We need people to use these devices responsibly, or we will lose them.
