How well marked is the Birch Spring Gap Campsite north of Fontana dam? Will I be able to find it if I get there in the dark? Are there bear cables?

Thanks,

It is well marked and you shouldn't have any problem finding it. There is a sign on a post along the trail (going NOBO the sign is on your right, campsite on the left). There are bear cables, and for good reason, there are a LOT of bears in that area, probably more than any other area of the park. For that reason, that campsite is closed for extended periods almost every year. It is a reserved site so you will have to call and get a reservation (same for the shelters) to stay there. You can call up to 30 days in advance.

Yes, should be easy to find, there is a Very LARGE spring there & I think you should be able to find it just by sound. :p And: it's west of the AT, just FYI.
