The profile maps have blue numbers and letters at the top and there is milage written below. What are the blue letters and numbers?

profile maps mislead folks often. regular maps are far more useful, and elevation gain and loss can be deduced from them.

i can't count how many times i heard this on the trail this past year "that dern profile map didn't show this" or "this can't be right, the profile map doesn't look that bad"

it misleads people a lot.

I concur. I only carry topo maps, but I do find profiles useful in planning.
