Whatever happened to Bill Bryson's movie?

I first heard about it in 2004, there was sporadic information for several years. I know there was some interest back in 2004 because I read the article (along with everyone else). That was the last solid information I ever received. The last rumor I heard was that they were filming, although not on the AT. Anyone know what the story is? Just another trail rumor?

I hope it's just a rumour- I don't want to watch a movie about a failed attempt at a thru hike. I kind of liked his book, but a movie? I don't think so. It would be pretty boring.

It is all just a rumour that get restarted every year.

The production lost momentum. In 2006 the producers had been working with the ATC to obtain permits to film but that was the last news I had on pre-production. I think the last word was Paul Newman and Robert Redford decided they were too old to play the leads but maybe Redford was still interested in producing the film. That was a couple years ago.

There is some info on the Internet Movie Database: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1178665/

May have been updated recently, but both those articles are still dated Jan 2008.

The project was back-burnered after Paul Newman died.

Plus, unless things have changed very recently, they still don't have anything near a finished story/script.

For those interested, yeah, this is gonna happen, but I don't think we'll see it anytime soon.

It'll come out the year I retire and probably be a smash hit. Because of the movie, I'll start my thru hike in the first year that over 25,000 attempt their thru.

Having thru-hiked the first full year after the book was published, I can say that it did cause a lot of interesting... characters.... to take to the trail. It was not all together a bad thing.

This past May and June whilst backpacking across Northwestern Scotland it seemed that everyone I met asked me if I had read "Walk in the Woods". They seemed to really like the book. I didn't shoot down their enthusiasm, but neither did I comment much on it.

Bryson's Notes from a Small Island did for Scotland's hiking community what A Walk in the Woods did for the AT. Spread a good deal of over-the-top satire about the area, but also got a lot of folks interested that had never heard of those English and Scottish trails.

I first heard of Bryson from the British Royal Marines before A Walk in the Woods was released. They mostly love him in Britain.

I would gladly go watch the movie.

Considering how many movies are always in some stage of pre-production or "in development" and how LITTLE of those movies get made in the end , there is a good chance the movie will not be made..esp with Newman passing on. Ya never know, though.

(IMDB list 7200 movies in development currently! :O)

If they did make a movie, it would probable be very boring. Unless they make thing up to make it interesting. Your hike may be interesting to you but it isn't to someone else.

Actually, the movie could be very interesting if it was properly cast as a comedy. Pick your comedy characters is the usual way these threads go, so for something different this time let's try pick your white blaze comedy characters. My entry is Lone Wolf as Bryson and Wharrgy as Katz.

Tuckahoe
10-09-2009, 09:30
It would have to be a comedy as I dont think I could stand to see such a film anyother way. While there were a few spots in the book that were funny (Mary Ellen) and I liked Katz, I found Bryson to be grating, annoying and rather condescending. I also tired rather quickly of his environmental preaching. I am glas he is not someone that I would hike with or even hang out, as I would find myself holding him down and beating him about the head with my hiking stick.

Panzer1
10-09-2009, 11:40
Yes, I can see how a comedy would work with life on the trail. But they would have to take everything funny that ever happened to people on the trail and roll it all into one hike. Yea, that could be very funny but of course it would all depend on who they get to play the parts.

There is no doubt that traffic on the AT would increase after the release of this movie(if it ever happens). But I don't think the increase would be detrimental to the AT. The attention the movie gave the AT would be a positive thing in my eyes.

Robert Redford is working on "The Conspitator" in Savannah right now. I have a friend that knows someone in the Savannah film commission. He was taking Redford out scouting locations just a few days ago.

There is also no cast attached on IMDb Pro. If they were far enough along to be filming there would at least be some cast attached besides Redford. The recent updates on IMDB lead me to believe that this project will be underway soon though.

YUP, just found out the farm is about 2 miles from my house. They've been filming alot in Savannah, so, for now, it's The Conspirator.

Hey Warg's not fat - Katz is-so does he have to wear a fat suit?

This is what IMDbPro says:

"MOVIEmeter rankings provide a snapshot of what movies are hot based on the searches of millions of IMDb users. Updated weekly, these rankings also graph the popularity of movies over time and determine which events affect public awareness."

There is also a graph that shows the projects popularity over time. There is no real explaination listed here, but if you look at any publicity the project had over the past 2 years that's when it's popularity went up.
