I'm hoping someone here can help me. Me and a buddy of mine are looking for hike/camp for about 10 days just after Christmas in North Carolina and do some fishing. We are hoping to stay outa the Smokies because of all the rules (shelters only, permits, no fires, etc) Anyone have any where that would work? Thanks!

The South Mills River recreation area.
Beautiful place.
Campground is open year round.
Fly fishing is "delayed harvest" with lots of Brook trout.
Lots of hiking available too.

Don't give up on the smokies! I have fished the Deep Creek, Noland Creek, Hazel Creek and Forney Creek drainages and they are all great. Only a few reservation required sites, no shelters and fires are allowed. Start on 441 at the Deep creek trail and head to site # 53 then on down to # 55. Take the Pole Road Creek Trail to # 61 on Noland Creek then down to # 64 and then to # 74 on the Forney Creek Trail. Take Forney Creek up stream to # 70 then take Jonas Creek trail to Hazel Creek Trail and downt # 82 then on to # 85 and out via boat shuttle to the Fontana Marina. Jeff at The Hike Inn can arrange your shuttle between the marina and Deep Creek trailhead 828-479-3677. The Marina can pick you up at Hazel creek by appointment and bring you back to your car, their number is 828-498-2211. Total trip about 47 miles, 8 nights, 4 great trout streams.

Another suggestion - Stone Mtn. State Park. Good trout fishing and I believe the MST is near, you could hike north from there.
