The ski resorts opened up (first in North America!) this week...

It is snowing in town....

..and I am looking at my ski wax, getting my wool mittens out and thinking of fresh backcountry powder. Woo hoo!

I don't area (resort) ski..but hell, the thought of the ski areas opening this week puts me in a winter mood.

In that vein, I present this classic Disney short from 1941:

"If you should smell something out of the ordinary, don't be alarmed. It is only fresh air. ""

Snowing! This is October!! Barely! Shee, I may live in Florida, but I lived almost a decade in Anchorage, and I don't think we ever got snow this early (except for the "termination dust" on the Chugach mountain tops). Geez, Mags, sometimes I hate you! (Not really; I'm really envious, and would love to join your feasts! And hikes. And....)

Kind of. From what I understand, the skiing is higher on the mountain and not in an "official" ski area. It ain't the best snow from what others have told me as well. But, as mentioned, I am not a resort skier. Only going by what the ski resort folks state.

re: Global Warming

Hey..no political talk. :D

Plenty of time for snow and winter. I'll enjoy our 70-80 degree temps a bit longer.

Yeah my friends up in Wyo are getting that same snow this week. Oh the times that the kids had to figure out what type of Halloween costume goes over a snow suit. Don't miss that challenge at all.

I was up there (Mt Hood) the other day and the little ski area looks like basically a groomed ice field. It faces south so it probably gets slushy every sunny day. It may be technically open all year, but I wouldn't call it skiing.

When I hiked past there on the PCT, I camped below one of the chairlifts. It was quite a surprise when the chairlift started turning in the morning and there was a line of ski school students waiting to get on as I crawled out of my sleeping bag. This was in late July.

Be safe out there, Mags, and have fun.

God, how much I miss Colorado! Mags, quit posting about Colorado, you make many of us home sick! I might be going back to Colorado to watch CSU kick Wyoming's ass on Nov.27th, bet there will be lots of snow that day!

I'm an half-hour east of Missoula, up the Blackfoot River drainage. The house is at 3660', a couple hundred feet higher than Missoula itself. The past week featured lows in the mid-teens and this morning we awoke to 5½" of snow. At the higher elevations, I'm sure that translates to a foot...maybe a couple feet. Our snow will melt off next week but I think the mountains have their "termination dust."

To paraphrase the boys and girls on Battlestar Galatica, "Happy frackin' birthday to me!":D

It's passed peak foliage at my house. It's great for hiking these days. I think I can finish this project I'm working on in a few days. Then I will choose between hiking a section of the COHOS or LT. Life is damn good.:)

LMAO, your right. You'd think I was getting paid by the hour.
I've end to ended the LT a couple times and re-hiked sections a bunch of times. I've never done the COHOS, I've got the maps and the book and the time. I guess it will be the COHOS. I sure wish Winter could go with me.

I do envy your home digs Mags, but can you drive to the beach in half a day or hit the AT in 2.5 hours? I just got back from the Florida panhandle and plan to hit a trail tomorrow for a day hike.

My son emailed and said the forecast is 7* tonight in Missoula MT. The point is that white stuff usually is accompanied by cold air.

I must confess, I do NOT miss the beach. My visions of the beach are from Rhode Island. Overcrowded, full of tourists or guys named Vinny and girls named Maria. I suspect the Florida beaches are MUCH better!

Now, in half a day I can be in the Wind River Range, the San Juans or the canyon country of Utah.

In 2.5 hrs? I don't want to make people jealous...or 1 hr if I want to make people really jealous ;)

I will say, this view is accessed from a trailhead perhaps oh..15- minutes away! :D In fact, it is where I am going tomorrow before I meet up with some friends.

As for cold, I love the cold now. 7F out here is much different than what I grew up with. The Rockies winters are MUCH better than the Rhody cold I grew up with (grey skies, dampness that gets to the bone..and no fluffy powder to play in!). I love ski touring almost as much as hiking. Cold..sure. But dry, sunny and glorious!

I'll shut up now. Have to meet some friends tonight as well. :)
