How are the fall colors coming along this year on the trail, or has the rain and warm weather fooled them into thinking it's still summer?

I just talked with someone near Damascus...nearing peak, leaves just starting to come down, serious yard raking not far away. Not sure of their EV. Having cool snap right now, which will help fire off the remaining color. Might be no more than a couple of weeks of color left in that area, as long as no hard rainfall. I go up on the 23rd, so hope some good color remains.

In the upper elevations up here, the colors are starting to peak. Was up on top of Pisgah today and it was very colorful but still a good ways to go. The Maples are red orange and purple.

great color on the maples here in PA. We're in full change mid-state

I was in Monson last week and saw the colors in the 100 Mile Wilderness. It was close to peak then. I notice that there was snow above 2500 feet in northern Maine last night.

The photo here was taken 06 October north-northeast of Monson.

I like how the foliage network assumes that Rhode Island doesn't have any trees.

The last time that link was posted I felt the report for coastal Maine was way off. (Don't recall the date)

I would call the current report accurate.

Hard to do such a large geographic area and keep everyone happy.

Some of the maples have dropped 100% here. Oranges.

Some are vibrant red. Some are half red, half yellow.

Oak are just starting.

Moosewood is full yellow.

Beech/birch/poplar are full yellow.

Odd year.

Big on the news late last night....snow in the forecast for the NC mountains this weekend!!! I am into photography, and that's a great mix, peak color, and snow (just is 'dusting' on the ground is what they called out).

But, grrrrrr....I have a planned trip to the mtns the NEXT weekend...after peak. :( Guessed wrong when I set it up. Maybe lucky next year.

Purchase Knob (Smokies) is showing some color. That is, when you can see it.

In Massachusetts the colors are as amazing as ever. I was in Deerfield a few weeks back and the Fall colors on the trees are so pretty.

I just posted a bunch of photos in my gallery from this past weekend along the Blue Ridge Parkway. You can see the colors there. One picture is worth a thousand words?

Another photo from this weekend. (http://backpackers.meetup.com/166/photos/737637/11223858/#11223902)

The map said 10% to 15%, but I thought it was more.

I thought that October 17th was supposed to be "peak" foilage (sp?) of the year? Doesn't seem like it here in NJ. I have pictures from last year when I was out on the 17th of October and the trees don't even come close to comparing.

Tad past peak in Acadia. Spitting snow on Cadillac today.

Oak have really kicked in the past two days.

Is inland Maine into earth tones now?

A call to Hawk Mountain a few days back indicated leaves were showing some color. I can't report on intensity or percentage since I put off an intended visit due to the weather.

South of Kittatinny Ridge, we were beginning to see color intensify after a bright, sunny afternoon followed by a full day of sun before the rain came. Since most leaves weren't fully colored or near falling, there's still a possibility of something more once the rain runs off and the sky clears.

It might create opportunities to photograph something seen only rarely if a clear and cold day follows.

I was referring to opportunities to photograph snow on brightly-colored fall foliage. See Pa in January, post #16 (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showpost.php?p=908258&postcount=16), for a photo buried in another thread.

Frost captured on margins of red leaves may be more common, but I liked it.

About a week back there was still a lot of green in many places while others were pretty much pure yellow, especially Duell Hollow just south of the CT border. Should be interesting to go back in a week or so and see what the cold north winds have wrought.

Here's a few from Mt. Albert this last Friday/Saturday......

Saw a few southbound thru-hikers in shorts..temps in the 30's..and clipping off about 25 miles per day. They should reach Springer mid-week.

Woke up Saturday am about 0530 listening to the dogs that had treed a bear. Driving out of Standing Indian Campground, I saw quite a few hunters with their red hats and kennels built into the backs of their trucks.
Kinda' wish I had a red hat with all the hunting activity in the area !!

I like how the foliage network assumes that Rhode Island doesn't have any trees.

They have a note on the website explaining this:

"Due to a lack of foliage spotters, we regret that we will no longer be covering Delaware, Minnesota and Rhode Island."

Sounds like they need volunteers in these areas.

Still mostly green on the winter side of South Mountain. First frost last night. Bright and sunny today. Expecting more color in the sugar and red maples.

Coworkers observed or heard of enough snow last week to cover the ground in Minersville and more accumulation in the vicinity of Tremont and Frackville north of the A.T. in Schuylkill County, but none on Kittatinny Ridge so far.

In the Smokies the last 3 days, we saw everything from bare trees/leaves on ground to fully green slopes. It seems to depend on what direction the slope faces vis-a-vis the sun. The last day (yesterday) hiking down the Palmer Creek trail was particularly beautiful with different colors.

Still plenty of color there so go out and enjoy it!

Any color reports from North GA from this past weekend?

Not much color in the Smokies one week back.:(

For some reason, there has been little reds and oranges near where I live. Right now it's yellows, browns and still a good bit a green. The yellows are brighter today, hickories especially.

The only reds to be seen are worn by the white oaks which never are all that bright, dogwoods and sumacs. The scarlet oak and red maple leaves have mostly fallen. Some sugar maples are getting brighter and showing a hint of orange.

Was just up on the trail and the colors are peaking here. The amount of rain has forced many leaves onto the forest floor, still, it was amazing to see

Just finished up a hike from Vernon, NJ to Salisbury, CT yesterday. The leaves were past peak when we left Connecticut, and we were starting to see a few bare patches.

From Erwin to Max Patch, anything over 3000' was past peak, with most of the leaves having blown off. Below that you can still get some good colors, especially the yellows.

Same here on the coast of Maine. Half the oak leaves are down.

Plenty of beech in their various golden brown glory.

One goofy maple, still has all it's leaves in pale yellow.

Fine time of year. I can see again!
