That is a good thing.. Should get the moderators to post it somewhere that is easy to find for hikers for planning so we don't have to search for it..Maybe under planning or articles....

This is a great link! I'm looking at the map for the border of TN/NC and every day for the last 10 days or so you can see the snowy area get smaller and smaller!

edited to add: hmmm, it seems to be just a model. Not sure how accurate it actually is.

FWIW, this is "modeled" data, and is not related to real data. Back when I first learned of this feature a few years ago, I compared it to the (known) reliable SNOTEL sensors in my area and found the modeled data to be wildly inaccurate.

If you are trying to predict watershed holdings, it is good enough, but for finding out snow depth in a particular area, forget it.

Yes, it is "modeled" information, but at my house it's been reasonably accurate. So, don't count on it being totally accurate, but lacking real data it's better than nothing.

I'd say right now the biggest source of error here (north central Mass, 2 miles south of NH), is that the modeling is too coarse to capture variation with altitude. Usually, that won't matter much, but this year 300' change in elevation made a big difference in the amount of snow we received and how fast it's been melting.

Aye, dunno why that is, but I do know that it's main use is to predict watershed quantities.

National Snow Analysis (http://www.nohrsc.noaa.gov/nsa/index.html?year=2010&month=3&day=17&units=e&region=Northeast) is where its at for accuracy IMO

Was out in the Mtns. yesterday and checked their report against my personal observations.
There is 3' of snow where they say there is. ;)

It's not entirely modeled. It gets updated based on reports. So for example, when the middle elevations just got a couple of inches of snow on the ground just a day ago, the map changed to reflect that.
